Booklet as Prevention Effort In Its Effect on Adolescent Smoking Intention

Abstract

Smoking causes illness and death. Theory of Planned Behavior (TPB) is a theory that successfully predicts behavior. This theory explains that intention is the strongest predictor of behavior. Awareness to adolescent is about free from smoking behavior. The way to prevent include increasing knowledge using booklet. The purpose of this study was to determine the effect of booklet education on smoking intentions in adolescents. This study used a one group pre-test-post test design conducted at SMA TM Yogyakarta city. The study population was adolescents at TM Yogyakarta City High School with a total population of 43 people. The research sample used total sampling and data was collected by questionnaire of intention based on TPB. Wilcoxon Test was performed. The results showed that the majority of adolescents did not smoke (67%), 63% of close friends of adolescents is smoker, 37.2% of adolescents had strong intentions to smoke and decreased to 25.6% after counseling. The results of the Wilcoxon test, shows the p value of 0.001, means there is a difference in intention before and after counseling using the booklet. The conclusion of this study is that the booklet about the dangers of smoking has an effect to reduce adolescent intentions towards smoking behavior.
