THE Changes in Sleep Quality Scores in Breast Cancer Patients Through Progressive Muscle Relaxation Therapy and Sleep Hygiene Education
Abstract
The sleeping disorders on patients with cancer are due to some factors such as medication, environment, and psychosocial disorder, unemployed, and their cancer stadium. Progressive muscle relaxation (PMR) and sleep hygiene education (SHE) are a therapy that could make the body relax and can accelerate the time to start sleeping. The aim of this study was to evaluate the effect of progressive muscle relaxation and sleep hygiene education to change sleep quality scores of patient with breast cancer. Quasi-experiment within pre-post test within control group was used. The samples collect by probability sampling with metode consecutive sampling method. Sixty two breast cancer patients from the group of interventions (32 respondents) and a group of control (30 respondents) in Dharmais Cancer centre Hospital who have poor sleep quality score, with use a pittsburgh sleep quality index (PSQI) questionnaire. The intervention group will take PMR and SHE for two weeks and the control group was not expose to PMR and SHE. Statistical test results with independent t-test showed a significant difference in score of sleep quality between the intervention group and the control group (6,66±3,815;9,30±3,334, p value = 0,005). There were a significant change in sleep quality index score between intervention and control group. Progressive muscle relaxation exercise and sleep hygiene education proven are a therapy which is a combination of complementary therapy and behavioral therapy that proved effective to change the sleep quality score of breast cancer patients, so that it can be an alternative therapeutic option to overcome sleep disorders.
